Our SMBC Specialized Finance Department is looking for a Vice President (VP) to join our Power Project Finance team.

The VP will be responsible for leading the execution and supporting the origination of new Power Project Finance transactions in North America within the credit and business guidelines established by the Bank. This includes supporting the cross-selling of products that enhance the return for the Bank, executing against the department strategy set forth by the Group Head and providing guidance and direction to junior members of the team.

You will also follow market trends, collect marketing intelligence and propose ideas to the team for new opportunities. Also, you will support execution efforts, reviewing due diligence reports, coordinating processes with clients, advisors, other lenders and internal conterparties and provide guidance and training to junior colleagues.


  • Lead the execution of project finance transactions in North America with the oversight of the sector head and/or other senior colleagues. Cross-sell products that enhance return for the Bank (DCM, Financial Advisory, deposits, etc.)
  • Present the transaction internally, lead the preparation of credit applications for all new transactions, manage the credit process with the Credit Department and back office, perform any due diligence activities, negotiate documentation, etc.
  • Continuously monitor and manage existing transactions, including the review and processing of waivers and amendments, internal reports, special credit requirements, etc.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other departments with overlapping clients in order to develop new business opportunities and enhance our position in the market.
  • Understand external regulatory matters and internal compliance and policies and procedures; proactively escalate operational risk loss events to management as necessary.
  • Delegate and review the work of junior members of the team and provide guidance and feedback.
  • Attend bank meetings, industry events, conferences and seminars in order to keep abreast of industry trends and developments and to expand network of client contacts.
  • Support marketing and origination of new transactions by preparing pitch books and marketing materials and attending client meetings with senior colleagues.
  • Present research and analytics to senior marketing officers that supports new business opportunities stay abreast of industry trends and current market conditions.
  • Ensure compliance of all internal and external matters in accordance with banking regulations, bank policy and best practices.
  • Stay current with industry trends and developments.


  • Education: BA / BS Degree. Preferred: MA / MS / MBA. Formal credit training preferred.
  • 7 to 10 years of professional experience in Financial Services, including at least 5 to 6 years of specialized experience in Project Finance, Leveraged Finance, or Investment Banking.
  • Good understanding of Project Finance (including Bank Loan and Letter of Credit Offerings), Structured Finance, Project Bonds, Project Loans, Loan Sales & Syndication, Debt Capital Markets, Financial Advisory, Investment Banking, and Financial Guarantees.
  • Good understanding of gas-fired and renewable energy projects and financing structures specific to these assets.
  • Hands-on experience with financial modelling, due diligence, negotiating term sheets and finance documentation, mitigating credit and other risks, and other related project finance activities. Experience analyzing and negotiating documentation for financing and investments.
  • Some knowledge of finance and debt advisory, acquisition finance, bond and equity underwriting, private placements, foreign exchange, asset securitization, cross-border M&A, and export credit agency services.
  • Able to build and develop relationships with client contacts. Knowledge of the region (local markets as well as political and economic dynamics) including regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills both written and verbal; comfortable presenting and negotiating externally with clients and key industry contacts, and internally with senior management and internal departments such as Credit group.
  • Ability to build a network of relationships across the Bank to support and facilitate new business ideas and opportunities.
  • Self-driven and motivated. Demonstrates leadership and can provide guidance and training to junior colleagues.
  • Attention to detail and ability to complete work accurately in a timely manner against strict deadlines.
  • Expertise with MS Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Bloomberg.
